First in Basque Country.
The Vitoria-Gasteiz Urban Solid Waste Treatment Plant is a modern facility that converts organic municipal waste into biogas and electricity. Built by the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Álava Provincial Council with EU Cohesion Fund support, it is the first plant of its kind in the Basque Country to valorize organic waste on an industrial scale.
The plant processes up to 120,750 tonnes of raw waste per year, reducing landfill disposal by 50% while generating renewable energy. It uses advanced, fully automated methanization and composting technologies designed to be safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly. In addition to waste treatment, the facility promotes environmental education through an on-site learning center and guided observation areas.
