Pioneering Biomethane Innovation in Belgium

Established in 2018, this facility was the first of its kind in Belgium to upgrade biomethane and inject it directly into the public gas grid. Operated by IOK Afvalbeheer, the plant processes up to 35.000 tonnes of biowaste annually, primarily consisting of source-separated organics like food and yard waste.

With a reactor volume of 2.775 m³, the site not only upgrades biomethane for grid injection but also utilizes it for local energy generation through a combined heat and power (CHP) system — contributing to both renewable energy production and regional sustainability.

Each year, the site produces sufficient biomethane to support close to 500 households (average Belgian household consumes about 1.400 m³ of methane per year for heating and cooking).

"The collaboration with DRANCO proved very important to our team. Their system treats 300 tons of kitchen waste for us every day. This happens efficiently, reliably, and without the need for tank cleaning or maintenance. After three years, it’s still running like day one."
