Lots of waste for lots of energy.
Allerton Waste Recovery Park in North Yorkshire is designed to transform 320,000 tons of household waste each year into enough electricity to power at least 40,000 homes, potentially up to 60,000 based on updated consumption figures. The facility reduces landfill use, increases recycling, and integrates three processes on one site: mechanical treatment, anaerobic digestion, and energy‑from‑waste. After a three‑year construction program, Amey moved the site into a 25‑year operational phase following rigorous commissioning and testing. Built on a former quarry next to a landfill, the project was delivered on budget through a Public Private Partnership with North Yorkshire County Council and the City of York Council.
Shareholders Amey, Equitix, and the Pensions Infrastructure Platform will operate the facility for the full concession period. The site can process up to 1,400 tonnes of waste per day, with recyclables recovered, biodegradable waste converted to electricity via the DRANCO digester, and remaining waste used in the Energy from Waste (EfW) plant.
