Process efficiency and performance optimization studies

What is an optimization study?

The study provides a detailed assessment of the current situation of your installation. To achieve this, we analyze samples of both the input substrate and the digestate. By performing analyses on these samples, we can develop a clear picture of the digester’s health and its remaining potential. In addition, we analyse the operational data to gain insight into how the installation has performed to date.

Why should you do it?

Capital expenditure represents a significant share of the total cost of an installation. Moreover, available subsidies are often performance-based and time-limited. It is therefore crucial to achieve as much of the installation’s potential as possible. A detailed study that determines this maximum potential and identifies possible improvement areas supports reaching this optimum performance level.

What do we need?

Labo Consulting

Primarily, we require samples from the installation. These consist of one feedstock sample and two independently taken digestate samples:

  • Feedstock sample: ± 2 kg
  • Digestate samples:
    • Large sample: ± 1.5 kg
    • Small sample: ± 0.5 kg

When collecting the samples, representativeness is essential. We can provide guidance to ensure the samples are as representative as possible.

In addition, we need a clear overview of the installation’s performance over the past period. For this purpose, an overview of key operational data from the past year (or longer) is required. The following data is essential:

  • Effective reactor volume (m³)
  • Reactor content (tonnes and/or m³)
  • Feedstock/digestate mixing ratio (%) *
  • Feedstock input (tonnes/week)
  • Digestate extraction (tonnes/week)
  • Biogas production (Nm³/week)
  • Methane production (Nm³/week)
  • Digestate temperature (°C)

* This can also be calculated based on the feed rate and the digestate recirculation rate.

What do we deliver?

Terrassa close up2

We perform detailed analyses on the collected samples. In parallel, the operational data is processed and presented in clear graphical overviews. Based on this combined information, we determine the current health, historical performance, and ultimate potential of the installation. These findings are presented in a clear and structured report, concluding with concrete recommendations for practical adjustments to the biological process operation.
